Sisters

My sister and I are only 21 months apart. My parents used to joke that whenever I did something new, Rachel would be right behind me, wanting to do it too. As long as I did things first when we were kids, like riding a bike, jumping off the diving board, learning to drive, it didnít bother me at all.

I was planning my wedding, so it came as no surprise to the family when Rachel announced her engagement. But it was when she became pregnant, in the midst of my own struggles with infertility, that I recognized the 'story' of my life: being the older sister, I was supposed to achieve these major life events first. This was clearly a break in the rules. Adding insult to injury, not only was the infertility bringing me down, but my sense of myself as the family leader was taken away.

It was so helpful to read about the reproductive story. I now understand more clearly the enormity of my loss and I plan on discussing this with my sister. Hopefully it will help us mend.
